Don't let the whole corporate thing fool you…
So, this company that does tons of stuff with independent artists and writers contacts me because they heard about what I was doing for bands on MySpace Music. They handle a lot of copyright registrations for bands and really wanted to find new and creative ways to help them. When I start explaining what I do on Myspace Music, the company wanted to know if I'd be interested in writing a book about it. After reading the book and seeing the success I had promoting bands, this company hired me to be in charge of the entire music promotion division. They are letting me create products and services that I think will best help you guys.
So, what can Karina do for our band?
A lot of bands have their minds in the right place, but never quite seem to find success.
I'm not here as cheerleader, or to solicit “business” for MySpace Music. I'm not affiliated, but I do happen to think it's a really freaking cool idea.
Well, that is until EVERYONE thought it would be the easy way to promote their band and started uploading their crappy demos they recorded in their parent's basements and decided to start sending out messages claiming to have “the best music on MySpace.” Yeah, how many of THOSE messages have you opened lately.
That's part of what I wrote this book. MySpace Music has huge potential to help you promote your band, but you have to think a certain way. I'm not a genius, I just don't think like most people. In this book I tell you exactly what I did on MySpace Music for the bands I work with. I assure you it works.
The best part is how fast things can go for you. The first band I started working with got over 1,000 fans in less than a month on MySpace. It was awesome because I could send messages in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep and there was nothing better to do but watch stupid infomercials or Seinfeld re-runs ...in fact, I would tell people I was listening to this music, eating cheetos at 4 a.m. , and sending out these messages. They loved it. The response was insane.
I could probably write a new book every week with all the promotional ideas I'm always getting. I'm not volunteering though…writing this book was one of the most boring, tedious things I've ever had the pleasure of doing. The point being, I have a lot of crazy ideas, and I want to pass them along to you.
But Karina, there are TONS of places to promote my band online; How do I choose?
True, there are a lot of websites where you can upload and sell your music, but most of the traffic generated by these sites is from bands that are trying to upload their own music. They are your competition and are not going to be buying your CD's. This is okay if you just want a place to direct people to your music, but why not find a place where you can upload your music, and get connected with new fans?
MySpace music was a great idea that actually addressed that exact problem. MySpace music allows you to upload your music, add pictures, write about your band, and meet tons of people?all for free. I wasn't about to argue with that when I heard about it.
To use MySpace music you don't have to have tons of money, or a huge marketing team. The entire reason I got into promotion was because I wanted to help my friend's band get their name out, and I knew they didn't need to be spending thousands of dollars on promotional companies.
Armed with a MySpace Music account, a bunch of crazy flyers, and endless phone conversations with venues, I set out to conquer the art of band promotion. I'm not the only one with this ability. You can do it too. Unless, of course, you are a completely oblivious moron, in which case you belong working in an office cubicle or as a garbage man and not in the music industry. Just as an example, here are some of the things I write about in my book:
Things that real bands are doing on MySpace Music to make it for themselves
There you have it friends, a little sample what I'm about. Want more? Guess you're going to have to read the book. |
